Mama Mia, Pasta & Pizza

Cool scenery on the way to Verona, Italy (another 5 hours driving) after staying overnight @ B&B Motel along A9 Autobahn, somewhere before reaching Munich, towards Innsbruck. The building is a church and most of them have minarets like this one in this part of the world.
Also tepi highway in Austria on a hill overlooking the town of Innsbruck.

VERONA
Romeo...Romeo..wherefore art thou Romeo...? This is Juliet's house siap with the balcony where she tragically called out to Romeo. Nobody knows whether the lovers really existed or not but VERONA holds the claim to having the houses of the greatest lovers in history. The bronze statue in front in the courtyard is supposedly that of Juliet. The most in-thing to do when visiting the statue is to rub its right breast, konon nyer will bring good luck. Sebab tu la the right side of the bronze Juliet nampak macam bersinar-sinar dari yang sebelah lagi! And kecik sikit kut sebab dah haus...selalu sangat kena rub-a-dub-dub.....

Hundreds of notes proclaiming love, stuck by visitors on the wall near the entrance to Juliet's house. Yang sedang hangat bercinta, semua proclaim cinta sejati Romeo & Juliet. Lekat la satu note "I Lap U" kat situ.

Malaysian girl with slippers sunbathing at the semi-circular open-air Roman theater in VERONA. She got weird stares from the Mat Sallehs coz she was the only one walking around in slippers. Orang lain ada yang berboots lagi. Although very sunny the temperature was not that high at that time. But for her...she's always berkirap panas. This theater was built in the 1st century and after the fall of the Roman Empire, it remained buried for many centuries, covered by buildings that were built on it. Serious recovery began in 1834 when a rich veronese, Andrea Monga bought all the houses there and conducted excavation and demolition work. In 1904, the City of Verona bought the property and brought the theater back to life. It has since been used for summer festivals and concerts.

VENICE..here we come....

Venice is built on an archipelago of 177 islands formed by 177 canals in a shallow lagoon.
Piazza San Marco, Venice. We opted for a walking tour on our own rather than taking the water taxis as it enabled us to get sesat here and there while simultaneously discovering the area on a more personal basis. Bukan nyer jauh pun to get from one end to the other. Very old buildings, small walkways, bridges across canals, quaint shops including those yang tourist traps yang mencekik darah selling souvenirs from keychains, masks right up to Murano glass and hand made lace (konon hand made by the locals but heard that many were conned into buying mass produced versions from China), cobbled streets, sounds of water lapping up the walls, deep green lumut kat dinding, gondolas passing by along the smaller canals.....haihhhhh...so enchanting... rasa tamau balik worrr....

An Arab brother solat right there tepi canal and depan museum (Gereja), tak yah lapik pun. No excuses for not praying, di mana ajer anda berada, boleh belaka, tepuk dada, tanya Iman...

Such great view from the pier at Piazza San Marco overlooking the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute

Dapat jugak naik gondola after much haggling. Mula2x dia letak
€120, we say €50...dia kata kalau nak €50 kayuh sendiri daaa....last2x agreed at €70 for the 5 of us. Ok lahhhhh....

This halal pizzeria is where Mama panicked when Angah went missing. Tengah sedap makan pizza and doner kebab he rushed out kata nak pergi toilet. Belum sempat pesan apa-apa, dah hilang. Minah Italian tu dah siap masak 2 gigantic pizzas yang dia tengah sodok dalam gambar ni. Tunggu punya tunggu tak jugak muncul, sampai almost 45 minit. Mama dah rasa seram sejuk, phasing up and down the alley, heart felt as if it dropped down the pit of her stomach. Abah seperti biasa cool jer...tak macho ler panic2x ni. Thousand and one permutations going in Mama's head...maybe he took a wrong turn and got lost in the maze of alleys....kena kidnap dik Mafia (ada Mafia ke kat Venice?...selalu dalam TV kat US tu ada la...) and dibawak depa lari naik water taxi. Seriously, memang senang nak hilang kat situ coz the alleys all look the same and the bridges across the many small canals will lead you to a totally different direction. Satu hal lagi macam mana nak cakap kat polis...we know only a smattering of Italian...prego, uno, due..and Italians ni sangat susah nak cari yang boleh berbahasa Inggeris. Kalau pun dah cakap kat polis, bukan nyer polis boleh pakai hailer and call out..."Alif Roziaedy...please come to the counter, your Mama dah pengsan with worry". He could be on one of the many islets. So...not knowing what to do, Mama with air mata bergenang sat on one of the bridges and doa kat Allah SWT supaya pelihara anak Mama tu. Tak lama lepas tu, selamba jer dia jalan towards us. Biasa la kebanyakan orang Melayu, tadi anak hilang menangih, dah jumpa kena marah ler, nasib baik tak sekeh kepala tu. Dia boleh cakap..."aper Mama risau, chill la. Angah tau jalan la....lagi pun rupa Angah kan ke macam Italian" . Hishhhh....suruh pegang bucu baju Mama bila jalan nanti baru tau yer....

LEANING TOWER OF PISA

Bad weather when we were in Pisa....drove 3 hours from Venice just for Abah to tahan tower ni with his hands dari torgolek....we were in awe masa mula2x sampai, like watching a life-sized postcard of the leaning tower. Most people took shots with hands up in the air konon2x menahan tower ni. In this pic Abah panjat atas batu just so that he "tahan" the middle part.

Ada rupa Italian boy ke?

LAKE GARDA

Lake Garda is one of northern Italy's popular tourist destination. Since the lake is huge and we were on a "touch-and-go" kinda trip, we had to pick and choose certain areas only. We were at Sirmione, salah satu dari Lake Garda's most popular sights. One of its major landmark, Scaleger Castle was built towards the end of the 12th century as part of a defensive network surrounding Verona.

BERNINA EXPRESS : TIRINO, ITALY -ST MORITZ, SWISS

The Bernina Express also called the Red Train chugs along the Unesco World Heritage Line at 30 km/h. It is one of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps, taking tourists from Chur (the oldest town in Switzerland) to the village of Tirano (Italy) going through 55 tunnels and 196 bridges. It is the highest alpine tranversal in Europe and one of the steepest railway dalam dunia passing through mighty glaciers and highest mountains. We didn't take the full route sebab teramat mahal tiker nyer untuk 5 orang so we opted for a section of the full journey, from Tirano to St Moritz rather than up to Chur. 2-hour journey up so enough for us to go ooohhh...and ahhhhh...Being the skiing playground for the rich and famous, St Moritz itself tak der anything interesting apart from the skiing activities and the breath taking sceneries.

InsyhaAllah....Jumpa lagi tahun depan....

Spring is here to stay and temperature has been in the teens these past few days. All of us miss the snow especially Hakeem. He has been saying "Ma...why is it so hot" and hari tu found him tidur with just his boxers. Ni baru spring, nanti kalau summer he'll be asking for 2 kipas. Kalau dia kat Malaysia baru dia tau langit tinggi or rendah with the scorching temperature I heard these days back home. Anyway, few weeks back we went for our last snow fling for this season, again in the Harz. This time the place is called Torfhaus and we found a spot specially for sleighing complete with lift so that tak payah menapak naik bukit lepas zooming down on the sleigh. Masalahnya with the lift tu is we have to berpaut like nobody's business to the sleigh if not sleigh tu will shoot up and you'll be left tergolek like what happened to me and Syirah....last2x meniarap atas sleight tu baru boleh. Hakeem all 3 times tercicir when dia berpaut dekat Angah punya sleigh and he had to menapak alone up the hill. Punya penat sampai menangis dia after the 3rd time. Shiannnn my baby (ciannn sangat -___- tak pun,by syirah. hehe)....Enjoy the pix....

This is when Angah tercicir his baby bro...

So his baby bro merah padam muka...last2x menangis penat!

Then, Angah kena go pujuk and rescue adik...

This is so sweet.....

Milk anyone.....?

Spring is here although we've been saying that since 2 weeks ago and yet we still have snow even up to early this morning....snow in mid-March? Some say don't fret, be prepared for snow during Easter too. Weather around the world has turned haywire thanks to global warming.

Anyway, one of the early signs that winter is ending and spring is on the way is when you see this particular cenonet plant which we found in our front garden.

Snowdrop it's called, it's a winter bulb. It pops out towards the end of winter, often pushing through the snow to appear. With its botanical name Galanthus, derived from Greek gala (milk) and anthos (flower), it is only normal that its white flowers look like drops of milk, and is commonly called the milkflower. Buleh gamaknya tadah mulut bawah them flowers.....I'll be looking for Crocus next.

Food...Glorious Food...

It's been quite a while since I updated this blog. The mood was just not there and for me, to write kena ada angin baru boleh jalan. So today the angin is whispering thoughts of food that we had recently sebab teruja tengok the other half mengasah bakat masak western food. Last 2 weekends we had a blast of fatty food when I made pizza one day and masak lemak cili api udang with buncis and nenas with pecal the next. (Pizza base punya recipe ni I got from another blog of which I'm an avid silent reader...Min of Salam Dua Benua...I so love her blog which is a must-read for me...hari-hari check for her updates...thanks Min for the recipe and minta halal sebab mention kat sini). Since sindiri buat, topping teramat mewah, ada yang salami with cheese, ada yang turkey, pineapples and cheese....all with generous helpings of each...Bestttt...

Since then, he's been lamenting about his boroi perut, asal lalu cermin monyok jer rub his perut yang macam orang mengandung 5 bulan. He then decided to go on a diet which delighted us coz now everybody can eat same type of food. Kalau tidak tu, me and the kids jer yang akan partake in this type of fare and kena masakkan hubby his nasi with lauk pauk dia. Now masak sekali harung for everybody.

So, we've been having soups, baked stuff and setakat ni we're enjoying it. Carbo intake is minimised especially rice.
Days when I'm at work, and the kids will have lunch in school, Abah will cook "Sup Semua Taruh" ie loads of vege and meat all thrown inside. When I come back from office no more masak additional like I used to buat, pasta bake ke, muffins ke, roti jala ke...coz semua orang makan sup. Bila muak sup, buat segala roast pulak. So far we had roast chicken, baked fish and the latest today hubby tried his hands in making Roast Lamb, of course with the cooking instructions from me. Imran made the mash potatoes and I made the gravy. Hasilnya....the lamb is verrrry..verrry..tasty. He said he put in his special additional ingredients, tak ikut bulat-bulat my recipe, tu yang taste out of this world...Wahhhh...dah eksennnn skarang nooooo..mentang-mentang dah terer masak.
Semalam however true to his perut yang dah graduate down to 4-month looking, he mengidam makan pau pulak after looking at blogger friend Mami's blog, so he asked me to make some. The recipe that I had in my recipe file kena pakai Hong Kong flour, mana pulak nak cari kat sini yang baking ingredients memang hampeh. Tengok recipe Mami quite easy and menjadi elok tapi kena pakai yis basah. Masalahnya, I don't have that in stock, yang ada dry yeast import dari Malaysia, so cari resipi from other blogs and found one in Kak Rin's (Naz Rinnchan blogspot. Kak Rin is actually my senior at SMS Taiping). which uses plain flour and Yis Mauripan. Hasilnya tidak mengecewakan. (Thanks Kak Rinn).. the traditional pau rose bagai dipam-pam bila dikukus and making it is so easy-peasy. Ada la rasa macam makan pau yang ada makcik jual from her van kat depan Stesyen Keretapi Taiping.
SInce I made 1 kg weight of tepung and when I divided into portions terbanyak la pulak, had to think of other fillings to put in as the inti ayam that I made earlier tak cukup. Korek laci found half a packet of dessicated coconuts so made some inti kelapa. Tak cukup lagi so the balance tu I just stuffed them with Nutella, serunding daging and even cheese. The verdict...they liked those yang inti kelapa and nutella the best. So, this recipe is for keeps...dah sehari pun still lembut and kalau nak kaw lagi just heat up in the microwave for 2 seconds, tastes like baru lepas kukus. Recipe as follows, as requested by dear cuzzie Wid :-

PAU KUKUS TRADISIONAL (resipi dari Kak Rinn of rinnchan.blogspot.com)

Bahan-bahan:
1 kg tepung gandum
11gm yis mauripan (=I packet)
200gm gula (=1 cwn)
100gm minyak jagung atau minyak masak (=1/2 cwn)
460gm air (=2 1/2 cwn air, boleh tambah jika perlu)

Cara-cara:
1. Gaul tepung dengan yis.
2. Larutkan gula dalam air.

Esok back to work for me and it'll be interesting to see what the other half will cook! Dia macam tengah mengidam Roast Duck recipe MIL Mami jer....asyik sebut quek..quek..quek...after embekkkk...embekkk...semalam. Macam ni punya menu bukan nyer diet! Boyot ader ler....Meantime, I'm actually nursing an upset stomach which has been growling and spewing its anger atas bawah since last Friday. I had food poisoning cukup dengan cirit birit and muntah monggek bak kata orang Peghark!
Ingatkan dah baik coz semalam dah reda, hari ni mengaruk balik perut ni penangan kambing tadi ghaser nyer.... I still hutang one update on our short trip to Belgium and Luxembourg. Nanti la bila angin jalan-jalan berghembuih I'll tic toc on the keyboard. Till then...toodles!
